Oxfordshire has 10% of England's wildflowers in our meadows and woodlands
Oxfordshire is blessed with an abundance of wildflower meadows, thanks to all the enthusiastic community planting groups across the county, Oxfordshire has 10% of England’s wildflowers in our meadows and woodlands.
Wildflower meadows matter. They look amazing and they are also great for wildlife. Wildflower-rich grasslands are essential for pollinating insects. They also provide food and shelter for other wildlife, including birds and mammals.Community meadows provide vital habitats for wild pollinators and are a fabulous way to engage communities.
Meadows can have a positive impact on nature, the environment and even our own wellbeing.
Looking at a wildflower for just six seconds has been shown to lower blood pressure
over 700 species of plants put down their roots in grassy meadows, pastures & fields
flower-rich grasslands and meadows can store 500% more carbon than fields of pure grass
the plants in a typical meadow can support nearly 1,400 species of butterflies, moths, bugs, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets and spiders.
It is for all of these reasons that the I love Oxfordshire groups have spent years championing to develop new wildflower meadows across Oxfordshire and to support communities to do so. Twelve new sites in Oxfordshire have new land management plans, let’s champion for more!
