In 2009, we began selling produce from our field at a weekly market stall outside the Eynsham Emporium. When the old betting shop opposite came up for rent in 2010, every Saturday we would look wistfully across and wonder: could we?
Well…we did! And since opening in May 2012, we’ve built “The Market Garden” to become your one-stop-shop for local produce.
Our priorities are local first, then British, then organic where the price is right. In 2018 we came full circle & moved into the larger premises of what was the Eynsham Emporium. This extra space allowed us to to expand our comprehensive selection of fruit and veg and wholefoods, as well as becoming the first shop in Oxfordshire to offer zero-waste shopping on a large scale - with over 100 bulk products to choose from.
Come along with your empty jars and containers and do your bit to fight the plastic problem! Alongside this we offer 1500 further products, including the finest locally baked sourdough and patisseries from Gatineau in Summertown and Degustibus in Abingdon, an extensive cheese counter, Eynsham produced cakes and preserves, Oxfordshire milk and dairy, free-range eggs and Hanborough honey. We also offer local SESI detergent refills, wholefoods, fairtrade teas & coffees, homemade ready meals made in Eynsham, as well as everything you need to cook delicious meals from scratch.
We set up The Market Garden from a belief that local food is the only way forward for a sustainable future. The supermarket model of standardisation and centralised distribution has done nothing for the flavour, freshness or variety of food, not to mention consuming vast quantities of fossil fuels. What we have not grown ourselves we source as locally and ethically as possible, with flavour and quality upmost in mind. Any imported produce is always shipped in—never air freighted.
