How one Person can make a big difference

Hi, I’m Janet and if you have been near Tar Lakes over the last 2 months you might have spotted me with my silly bobble hat and litter stick.

Lockdown has turned my work into endless hours in front of the computer and getting out for regular walks keeps me sane. My fellow walking fans might appreciate how frustrasting the sight of litter everywhere can be. I’ve really had enough of seeing it and decided to take action.

Over the last few weeks, I have gradually cleared my favourite 10k circular walk past the lakes of over 70+ sacks of litter and flytipping. Cans, bottles, dog poo, wrappers, tyres, etc. It turns out a pandemic and winter is the perfect time to do this, seeing that we are spending a lot more time in our local area.

Safely outdoors, sometimes with a friend, easy social distancing, litter easy to spot with the vegetation in winter sleep. There is still a bit left in hard to reach places but it is now possible to walk it enjoying nature and wildlife flourishing freely and safely again.

It has really surprised me how many walkers, cyclists and drivers have stopped to have an appreciative natter. I am so delighted that you guys love the new look as much as I do!

And I get rather excited spotting so many fellow pickers around Witney. Give it a go yourself. Don’t get endlessly frustrated with those who litter or the council. Anyone can do litter picking (safely armed with gloves, bag and litter grabber). It keeps you fit, makes you feel instantly positive in these very challenging times and you do something good for your local area.

Global environmental issues appear so massive but litter picking is one action a single person can take and make an immediate and visible difference. It’s a no brainer! There are thousands of people all over the country already out litter clearing regularly (check out KeepBritainTidy#LitterHeroes) and the more of you join the bigger a difference we can make.

I am planning to continue my walks to do weekly checks on the cleared areas to try to keep them that way for as long as possible and clear more of the surrounding paths. Feel free to stop by, have a natter or join in.
