Classic Mojito
Whisk yourself away to the beaches of Cuba
Of all the classic cocktails, this Cuban drink is one of the greats. Like a true Margarita the best Mojito is not too sweet, unlike the sickly sweet versions served up in many bars across the UK. It’s also wonderfully minty.
Although this classic dates back to the 1800’s and possibly even further – Ernest Hemingway helped to popularize the drink in the 1930’s. Listed on the International Bartender Association’s (IBA) official cocktails list, means that it has an “exact” recipe although there are many adaptions.
Ingredients
10 Fresh mint leaves plus a sprig to garnish
20ml Lime Juice
2-3 tsp White sugar (or Sugar Syrup)
Soda Water
Method
Some experts suggest using confectioners sugar instead or ordinary sugar as it dissolves more easily.
Muddle the mint leaves with the sugar and lime juice. Add a splash of soda water and fill the glass with ice. Pour in the rum and top with soda water. Stir lightly to mix all ingredients
Angostura bitters is a nice touch but optional.
Mexican Mojito
A standard Mojito is made with white rum, but a white tequila (Patron Silver Tequila is great) works perfectly with the sourness of the lime, mint and the sweetness.
Virgin Mojito Mocktail
Missing out the Rum or the Tequila doesn’t have to mean missing out on this great sweet, sour and minty concoction. Use a splash of apple juice instead of the alcohol.
