Ok it's an Oldie, but it's a Goodie
Although a massive hit in the 1980’s it’s still a great summer drink in this century too.
Beautiful, vibrant and layered with the colours of Summer.
And it’s Incredibly easy to make with no specialist equipment or know how.
Tequila Sunrise Classic
Method
Fill a tall glass (highball) with ice. Add tequila and orange juice and stir.
Pour in the grenadine. As you do it should sink to the bottom creating a beautiful layered effect. Giving a very gentle stir from the bottom upwards creates a more feathered look.
Garnish with orange slice and cocktail cherry.
Make your own Grenadine
You can easily make your own grenadine – its very easy
Grenadine Syrup
Some things are even better when you make them yourself. Grenadine is one of those things.
Contrary to popular belief, Grenadine isn’t based on cherries but on Pomegranates (sometimes other berries are used too).
Ingredients
Method
To remove seeds from Pomegranate I use the Nigella Lawson trick of cutting them in half and banging them with the back of a wooden spoon.
Once removed use something like a potato masher or the end of a rolling pin to squash and remove the juice.
Add juice and sugar to a saucepan and gently heat to dissolve sugar.
Add lemon juice
Chill and Store in an air tight container, in the fridge for up to two weeks.
If you want to keep it longer (up to a month) add 15ml of vodka to the mix
The Original - Probably
Back in the 1930’s a drink very similar to the Tequila Sunrise of today and most probably the inspiration was invented in Arizona.
It’s a very different drink but utterly delicious
Ingredients
Method
Fill a tall glass (highball) with ice.
Add Tequila, Creme de Cassis and Lime juice. Stir.
Pour in the grenadine. As you do it should sink to the bottom creating a beautiful layered effect. Giving a very gentle stir from the bottom upwards creates a more feathered look.
Top up glass with Fizzy water (or be decadent and try a slug of Prosseco)
Garnish with slice of Lime.
Tequila Sunset
Well if the Sun rises I guess it has to set – right?
Uses all of the same ingredients as a Sunrise but mixing the Grenadine with Sparkling water makes the redness stay on the top
Chocolate Orange - Sunset
Another take on the sunset but with the addition of Creme de Cacao?
Ingredients
Method
Add Tequila to a tall glass (highball)
Add Ice
Pour in Orange juice
Drizzle Creme de Cacao over and serve with Orange slice and cherry
